The Mayor's Housing Initiative has three primary goals:

• Preserve affordable housing stock and keep existing residents in their homes
• Convert vacant and underutilized buildings into new housing opportunities
• Promote the construction of new housing that is affordable to people of all incomes

The District of Columbia continues to experience one of the strongest real estate markets in decades and is working hard to establish a business environment where affordable housing can be financed and built. The District is firmly committed to providing housing opportunities for people of all income levels. The Fenty Administration has pledged to deliver 10, 000 units of affordable housing during its four year term, including the preservation of 5,000 existing affordable units and funding for 5,000 new units.
